On July 1, the PRM team met online with Ryan Lehning, Assistant General Counsel of SoundExchange, to discuss a potential reciprocal agreement between the two organizations.
SoundExchange is globally one of the largest neighboring rights organizations that represents producers and performers of sound recordings. Based in the United States, it collects royalties from U.S. digital radio platforms, all while connecting with collective management organizations (CMOs) from other nations to collect on behalf of their members. It has accrued an extensive repertoire, formed by more than 700,000 creators, since its inception in 2003; in Southeast Asia, SoundExchange has formally established partnerships with Indonesia and Thailand and is in continuous search for partnership opportunities in the region.
During the call, both PRM and SoundExchange expressed great interest in establishing a reciprocal agreement with one another. It is important to note that the Philippines is known for its unique blend of local and foreign music tastes, and with Original Pilipino Music (OPM) crossing waters and boundaries, this potential agreement is nothing short of mutually beneficial.
Indeed, a lot is in store for this partnership, much more for both local and foreign music creators and owners.
