Last November 15, the PRM team together with its Chairman Atty. Ricardo Blancaflor, attended the 2023 Philippine-Korea Copyright Forum. Other attendees were Kelvin Sum and Simon Seow from IFPI. This is an annual event that tackles intellectual property, specifically copyrights. Both countries talk about progress and best practices when it comes to music IP. For this year, the theme was “Music Copyright Industry and New Opportunities In The Digital Age.” There were representatives from both government agencies and Collective Management Organizations who were able to speak about their expertise. Topics included are the history of music and its digitization, early threats of piracy to the industry, and the role of streaming platforms in music. Korean representatives talked about the importance of copyright in relation to the meteoric rise of K-pop internationally. CMOs were able to expound on their distribution, collection, and neighboring rights. A common topic among all speakers was the rise of AI and its implication for music copyright. Although, still a developing topic, everyone was encouraged to embrace AI as it is here to stay.

It was indeed a fruitful morning of sharing free-flowing ideas. Different sectors were well represented, and each representative was able to chime in, give questions, and share ideas. As technology moves forward, through this forum, the music industry also takes a huge step forward.
