On the 11th of May, Philippines Recorded Music Rights Inc. (PRM) paid a courtesy visit to the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to discuss long-term plans for strengthening support for Filipino performers, promoting Original Pilipino Music (OPM), and deepening awareness and respect for intellectual property rights in the country.
The meeting was led by IPOPHL Director General Teodoro Pascua and attended by PRM General Manager Ace Acosta, alongside Licensing Manager Candice Lima, Marketing Manager Keeshia Mangio, and Membership Officer Ashley Benitez. Also present during the meeting were Emerson G. Cuyo and members of the Office of the Director General.
During the visit, PRM highlighted milestones, growth, and achievements over the past five years as an IPOPHL-accredited collective management organization representing producers and performers of sound recordings. The organization also discussed its continued expansion and its efforts to further improve royalty distribution, member support, and champion neighboring rights for sound recording producers and performers.
A major focal point of the dialogue was PRM’s five-year vision for promoting Filipino artists and ignite appreciation for OPM across different audiences, particularly among younger generations. To achieve this, PRM and IPOPHL explored possible future collaborations centered on intellectual property education, youth engagement, and campaigns designed to foster national pride in homegrown creativity.
Additionally, both organizations emphasized the need to increase public awareness among establishments and music users on the value of proper licensing, which directly sustains the local music ecosystem.
For PRM General Manager Ace Acosta, the meeting also served as a meaningful reunion with Director General Pascua, his former supervisor and longtime mentor. Their reconnection had them reflect on a shared commitment to uplifting Filipino creators in the music industry and protecting their sound recordings released to the public.
IPOPHL reaffirmed their continued support for PRM's initiatives, particularly in developing more educational programs that would promote OPM and its creators' livelihoods while driving the cultural and economic success of local music.
As PRM continues to grow, the organization remains committed to working closely with government agencies, industry partners, and stakeholders in building a stronger and more sustainable future for the Philippine music industry.
